ESL Tic-Tac-Toe takes a game every student already knows and turns it into speaking practice. To claim a cell, a student says the word on it out loud — so they are rehearsing pronunciation with every move. It is free, runs on your smart board, and offers Local, AI (the computer plays a smart game), and Live modes, with three cell themes (classic, flashcard, bubble). Because the stakes are playful, students speak more freely — a low-anxiety way to get reluctant talkers using English. Six ways to play:
Fill the cells with your lesson’s target words and let two students duel — each move is a pronunciation rep.
Short on a partner? AI mode lets a single student play against the computer, speaking each word to claim a square.
Switch to the flashcard cell theme to pair images with words — great for beginners linking meaning to sound.
Project the board and split the class into two teams who take turns choosing and pronouncing words. Track the series on the Score Keeper.
Load words that share a tricky sound and use the board as a focused drill. For dedicated sound practice, follow up with Phonics Twisters.
Use a quick game to activate vocabulary, then check retention with a Live Quiz or a round of Whack-a-Mole.
ESL Tic-Tac-Toe is one of many free games in the ESLKit classroom — see them all at ESLKit.org/games.
